Jongju Yoon
South Korean, b. 1971
Jongju Yoon was born in Daegu in 1971 and earned a master’s degree in Western Painting at Keimyung University. She is currently based in Daegu and maintains an active presence in the art scenes of Seoul and Daegu.
Yoon’s Cherish The Time series began in 2012, evolving through sub-themes such as She & Her, Breath, Be You, Composition, Space, Line, and Voyage.
The artist has been fascinated by the materiality of the fluid matte medium, as it is warm and translucent and also enables three-dimensional surfaces. She mixes it with acrylics and sieves the mixture; the resulting refined, consistent liquid is poured onto a canvas, which is then slanted to allow it to flow. To create depth of color, space, light, and lines on canvas, she repeats the process of pouring, drying, and sanding several dozens of times.
Each work by Yoon consists of multiple canvases, the sizes of which are determined by a regular sequence of multiples such as 1, 1.5, 2, etc. This method of sizing allows the canvases to be neatly grouped together, and because of the modular structure of the pieces, her work has the potential for limitless expansion.
The artist’s work method and structure is simultaneously maximal and minimal and holds infinite potential. Yoon aspires to continue her work, which is like a long journey in search of the profound and mysterious nameless colors that result from the accumulation of countless layers of color.
