He worked since childhood to help support the family, being a fisherman, mason and cart driver. Only at the age of 61 did he start painting, being discovered by Lucien Finkelstein, collector and director of the Museu Internacional de Arte Naïf do Brasil . His first individual exhibition was at the Sérgio Milliet Gallery , in São Paulo , which was followed by others. He was included in reference books edited by Lucien Finkelstein and Jacques Ardies, and is cited in several other national and foreign publications dedicated to naive art. [ 1 ]
His works are in the collection of the Museu de Arte do Rio and the Museu Internacional de Arte Naïf. He is considered an important Brazilian representative of the style.His exhibitions include his participation in the Pre- Biennial of São Paulo (Fundação Bienal de São Paulo, 1970), in the 29th Official Art Salon of Pernambuco ( Museu do Estado de Pernambuco , 1976), in O Mundo Fascinante dos Pintores Naïfs ( Paço Imperial , 1988), ] was one of two Brazilians selected for the Bratislava Triennaleof 2000, the most important exhibition of naïf painting in the world, was included in the Special Room of the Bienal Naifs do Brasil (SESC Piracicaba, 2004), the biggest event of its kind in the country, and in the show Encontros e Reencontros in Naïve Art: Brazil-Haiti ( Banco do Brasil Cultural Center and Museum of Brazilian Art , 2005).
