Biography

A key figure in European modernism, Austrian-born architect, artist, and designer Josef Frank’s design ideology and practice embodied a break from traditional forms of modernism pioneered during the 1930s. Adamantly believing in pluralism over conformity, Frank upheld designs and ideologies not always welcomed in his native Austria. Leaving Austria for Sweden in 1933 where he’d work as the chief designer for the Stockholm furnishings firm Svenskt Team, his work came to define Scandinavian modern design. Known for his colorful, whimsical floral patterned designs along with his creation of the Vienna School of Architecture, and its ideas on modern housing and interiors, Frank called for a more humane practice that responded to people’s everyday needs.
