Juan Rafael Coronel Rivera
Mexican, b. 1961
He was born in Mexico City on May 25, 1961. Coronel Rivera's professional work develops as a poet, storyteller, photographer, essayist, critic and art historian, curator, and editor. He began his photography work in 1985 as a critic and historian of the subject, with the text Visiones de agua dulce, that accompanied the homonymous exhibition by Dornith Doherty and which was presented at the Galería Alternativa in June of that year. Since then, he has collaborated with texts on the subject for books, catalogs, magazines, and newspapers. In 1987 he co-founded the Kahlo-Coronel Fotogalería, the first of its kind in Mexico, which remained open until 1991. From July 1989 to May 2001 he maintained a column on art criticism and art history in the newspaper Uno Más Uno, in which frequently addressed topics related to the image. Since 1995 he has dedicated himself to photography, in this field he has the photobooks Rituales atmósferas (Mexico, Envidia, 2000), Ce Acatl: Cuando las piedras hablaron (Mexico, Envidia, 2005) and La plaga. Un análisis alrededor del turismo. (Mexico, Talamontes Editores, 2019).
