Juanita Carrasco
Colombian, b. 1977
Juanita Carrasco has spent many years exploring cities, to understand them historically, socially and geographically through extensive trails and detailed observation of these. Through photography, which has been her tool, it has allowed her to record everything that motivates her in a sincere and spontaneous way. Taking as a starting point the observation of architecture, light variations and the people who inhabit these urban settings where construction, change, movement, and repetition become key elements for the construction of her images.
Carrasco studies the cities from urban renovation documents, their evolution and their consequent transformation.
Her work has been structured on the basis of important references, such as the texts of the Colombian semiologist Armando Silva, the way of studying the cities of the Spanish artist Xavier Rivas; how Gerhard Richter works with files; and how David Hockney breaks down spaces.
Carrasco was born and raised in Bogotá, which she has documented for many years. Her studies a Master in Visual Arts at the Javeriana University (2005) with an emphasis on Plastic Arts, allowed her training in various fields of visual expression, supported by drawing as a basic tool, the use of new technologies, and the study of art history and philosophy. With her subsequent specialization in Multimedia Creation at the Universidad de los Andes (2006), she deepens on her reflection on the design, production, use, application and impact of interactive projects on the internet and other media. In 2010 she finished the Master in Photography, Art and Technique taught by the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain, with which she delves into theoretical and technical concepts based on the latest trends in contemporary photography, and acquires the necessary resources to its theorization, analysis and criticism.
