Judith Foosaner’s monochromatic drawings in charcoal, graphite, acrylic, and oil distill picture-making down to the essentials of line, space, and shadow. “Since drawing is my basis and has always provided my clues, I’d go back to the beginning and draw from life using a variety of sources,” she says. Influenced by master draughtsmen, particularly Cy Twombly and Brice Marden, Foosaner’s images are filled with biomorphic forms, plant detritus, and calligraphic scribble. She works exclusively in black, allowing the nuances of line and shade to aspire towards musical and dancer-like movements. Foosaner also cuts up and reconfigures her drawings into collages to explore the creative possibilities of destruction and occlusion as a counterpoint to her draughtsmanship.
