Juju Sun
Chinese, born 1973

The paintings of Juju Sun revel in the beauty of the medium, suggesting landscapes through scribbles and thick swaths of gestural paint strokes. The artist studied in New York at the Art Students League with Larry Poons, and her work variously shows the influence of French Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, and the flowing naturalism of Chinese brushwork. By combining these techniques and traditions, Sun captures such ineffable effects as shimmering water and dancing sunlight in her abstract compositions of oil and acrylic. Her mastery of exuberant color and the poetry of line has earned her comparisons to Claude Monet, who was the subject of Sun’s first major solo museum show, “Monet’s Oriental Pond.”
