Drawing on film stills, popular culture, and art history for subjects, portraitist Juliana Romano paints individuals against undefined, abstract backgrounds to create works purely evocative of emotion. Working solely with oils, she uses flat, intersecting color planes to build her compositions, exploring color and form to construct a sort of idealized portrait without the use of observation. Romano does not know any of her subjects; “I don’t feel like I am capturing them,” she says. “I’m not sure portraiture can do that.”
