Jumper Maybach
American, b. 1963
Jumper Maybach is an abstract painter and the clown alter ego of Ben Workman. Workman paints his face white and dons clown makeup to create large-scale abstract works. Maybach draws inspiration from Jackson Pollock, often creating his works by laying canvases on the ground and splashing different hues of bright paint across them. As a man who experienced bullying and discrimination for his sexuality, Workman uses his Maybach persona to spread messages of universal love and acceptance. His alter ego was first created during a low point in his life, when Workman was outed by a coworker at his job and was subsequently harassed. Workman then created Jumper Maybach, and uses the character to work through his personal trauma. Workman held his first gallery show in 2013, and tells his story in the autobiographical documentary “The Jumper Maybach Story.”
