Since the 1960s, Jürgen Klauke has been using photography and performance to explore identity and gender norms. Orchestrating photographs in which he appears androgynous or otherwise disguised or degraded, Klauke seeks to deconstruct the persona of the male artist. He is perhaps best known for his “Transformer” series (1970-75), a provocative body of photographs that captured the artist in a variety of confrontational poses and sexually ambiguous guises. Klauke’s focus on his own body as an expressive vehicle has made him a pioneer in the genre of Body Art alongside Vito Acconci, and he has also been linked with Cindy Sherman for their similar techniques and concerns.
