K. Gretchen Greene creates intricate, labyrinthine sculptures by scrawling on and cutting sheets of steel with fire. The resulting large-scale compositions, bursting with protrusions and accretions, resemble futuristic foliage or water suspended by an alchemist’s spell. Drawing inspiration from nature and the passage of time, Greene creates sculptures whose biomorphic forms embody movement and seem to express states of transition. Greene works out of a studio at Artisan’s Asylum in Somerville, MA, a repurposed warehouse with community-oriented art-making facilities and classes, where she has served as Chairman of the Board.
