Karina Wisniewska
Swiss, born 1966

Karina Wisniewska’s paintings are informed by her background and training as a chamber musician and concert pianist. Wisniewska says her paintings are translations of her favorite musical compositions into visual form, and that her goal in painting is the same as that in performing music: “to forget all that I had practiced in order to allow the movements to flow freely.” Accordingly, many of her compositions have titles that refer to musical works by her favorite composters, including John Cage and Johann Sebastian Bach. The paintings frequently feature rhythmically repeating geometric and organic forms in lush colors. To create these effects, Wisniewska mixes pigment with quartz sand and applies it to canvas with either a paintbrush or a spatula.
