Karla Reid
Karla Reid specializes in contemporary African American Art. A tremendously gifted artist, she has the ability to bring her characters alive through a collage of colors. Karla Reid’s originals are widely collected by celebrities and are in private hands. Many of the artist’s originals have been obtained by collectors of contemporary art such as Bill Cosby, Ji-Tsu Cumbuka (“Roots”), Beverly Poitier Henderson, daughter of Sidney Poitier.
Karla Reid is a 1995 recipient of a grant from the Georgia Council for the Arts and a finalist for a 1996 Guggenhiem Foundation Fellowship. A native of Macon, Georgia, Karla pursued her formal art education at the University of Georgia. Karla’s vibrant magnificent paints are generously presented on paper in colossal sizes, which tends to make them more dynamic. Her techniques reflect a smooth velvety texture of pure rich color brought to life on paper. Uninhibited and bold, Karla masterfully uses these colors to take viewers into a world of unprecedented beauty, while arousing feelings of pleasure and joy.
Much of the influence regarding her subjects has been centered around her evolving understanding of African American history and culture. Her philosophy and belief that she is a channel through which the Creator inspires, provides her the power and insight to pursue art with a passion.
