Biography

Kata Legrady’s sculptures and installations disconcertingly combine objects associated with childhood with those associated with violence; two of her most frequent motifs are firearms and brightly colored confections. Legrady gained broad recognition for her series “guns & candies” (2008), in which she made enlarged reproductions of machine guns, grenades, and handguns, and then covered them with Smarties candies. That series has become a point of departure for other works, including “Bullet” (2012), a series of large prints of bullets decorated with candied hearts and flowers; and a sculpture Mickey & Minny (2011), depicting the iconic Disney characters exuberantly wielding rifles. In 2012, Legrady collaborated with Hermès to create “gun & saddle,” a sculpture series of oversized handguns fashioned with colorful leather saddles made by the fashion house.
