Kate MacDowell
Kate MacDowell hand sculpts and slip casts alabaster porcelain sculptures of rabbits, pine cones, and insects that resemble the intricate illustrations lifted from the pages of books of flora and fauna. MacDowell’s specimens draw attention to the precariousness of biodiversity in the face of climate change, as well as tensions between mankind and nature. A graduate of Brown University, MacDowell has exhibited at Scope Miami, Scope New York, London Art Fair, Art Paris Art Fair, and Solo Project Basel and her work was included in Banksy’s 2015 Dismaland installation. She uses scientific anatomical drawings, images of skeletal systems, and photographs of animals as source materials while she aims to illustrate a sense of solastalgia: The feelings of disorientation and angst that surface when people perceive damage to their local environment.
