Biography

Kent Bellows was a master of meticulous Realism, capturing the depth and complexity of the human condition in portraits produced in pencil, graphite, charcoal, oil, and acrylic. A life-long fascination with cinema and the work of auteurs such as Ingmar Bergman and Alfred Hitchcock inspired Bellows to construct sets for his paintings and drawings and incorporate dramatic lighting, aiming at expressing psychological and emotional states as well as effects of hyperreality. “The image I create on the canvas is the difference between the reality of a photograph and what is actually happening,” he once said. “This makes for a finely tuned picture, enabling me to capture the subject’s soul.”
