Koen Vermeule
Dutch, b. 1965
In 1992 I completed my study at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. Since then I have been working on an oeuvre that consists of paintings and works on paper. I debuted with an exhibition at Art & Project Gallery (Amsterdam) after which I was asked to exhibit at various museums and galleries in the Netherlands and abroad.
I paint landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes. The first two big, wide and empty, the urban landscape zooming in on small, concentrated scenes with people who seem to have put their actions and movements on hold. My work is characterised by silence and a theatrical impact.
My paintings are not narrative. I see the world with a photographic eye. I 'catch' everyday, fleeting reality and hold her for a moment. I want the mystery out of the mundane and try to uncover the trivial. My works are reflections on the present day, the rapid technological developments and the related social behaviour'.
