Korakrit Arunanondchai
Thai, b. 1986
Korakrit Arunanondchai combines music, video, painting, and performance in his ongoing explorations of cultural hybridity, technology, spirituality, and local mythologies. Stylistically, his films embrace the allures of music videos: They combine otherworldly visuals (some of which are shot via drone), quick cuts, and pulsing soundtracks. They take inspiration from the artist’s family and friends, contemporary issues in America and Thailand, and the supernatural. Arunanondchai has also created installations to showcase these works and made paintings inspired by the television show Thailand’s Got Talent. Arunanondchai received his BFA in printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design, completed his MFA at Columbia (where he worked with artist Rirkrit Tiravanija), and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He has exhibited widely around the world and participated in the Venice Biennale, Whitney Biennial, Gwangju Biennale, and Performa. Arunanondchai’s work has sold for six figures on the secondary market and belongs in the collections of Tate Modern, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Astrup Fearnley Museet, the Fondation Louis Vuitton, the Rubell Museum, and the S.M.A.K. Museum of Contemporary Art.
