Landia Davies
South African, b. 1979
Landia Davies is a contemporary South African sculptress who produces bronze
sculptures. She lives in a small town at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains in the
Western Cape.
Landia has degrees in Journalism and Sustainable Development and found her way to
sculpture through ceramics. Her love of working with clay - the ability to shape form and
create meaning - led her to produce sculptures in bronze. In the short time since casting
her first piece, she has flourished as an artist and gained growing success in galleries
countrywide.
Her sculptures are about the transformative power of vulnerability. They are invitations to
be brave enough to take risks and be true to yourself. Landia’s sculptures celebrate
naivety and playfulness in the midst of complexity and adversity.
The sculptures encourage the viewer to forge an authentic individual identity in defiance of
society’s tidy labels and categories. Her current body of work is about having the courage
to embrace raw human emotions. Landia wants the viewer to question the norm and
perhaps find that defining the form is not as important as feeling its state of being
