Poet, folk musician, farmer, and photographer Larry Towell has been documenting dispossessed populations worldwide since 1984, in searing, poetic, black-and-white photographs. In his words, concerns with land and the lack thereof unifies his prolific output: “If there’s one theme that connects all my work, I think it’s that of land-lessness; how land makes people into who they are and what happens to them when they lose it and thus lose their identities.” As a sharecropping farmer in rural Canada, Towell brings a deep understanding of our relationship to land and home to his work. He has documented his own family, as well as Nicaraguan Contras, relatives of the disappeared in Guatemala, Mennonite migrant workers in Mexico, and the Palestinians in conflict with the Israelis, among many other communities, capturing the hardship and pleasures of their lives in his keenly observed …
