Laura Plageman’s works oscillate between image and object, photography and sculpture, landscape and still life. Her two-part “Response” series is a reaction to an original image — a cumulative record of her memory of the time and place and subsequent experiments — sculpted and collaged into a tabletop assemblage and re-photographed. Plageman regards the places she photographs as object-like themselves in the way they are experienced (usually through a camera) and recorded, continually changing shape through layers of interpretation, forces of nature, and human impact. These perpetual new renditions are characterized by subtle compositional distortions, hovering between reality and artifice.
