Lawrence Abu Hamdan

The multifaceted work of Lawrence Abu Hamdan takes a critical look at politics, specifically how it relates to sound, and the implications of today’s pervasive culture of surveillance and listening and recording technologies. His work is often a mix of documentary, video and sound, installation, performance, and even workshops, influenced by his background in DIY music. As the commissioned artist for the 2015 Armory Show, Abu Hamdan created an audio essay and more than 5,000 “bugged” bags of potato chips based on research from MIT that shows how nearly any object might one day be turned into a listening device or “visual microphone.”
