Leah Beeferman
American, b. 1982
Fascinated with data and the collection thereof, Brooklyn-based Leah Beeferman makes drawings, installations, sound works, and animations. Despite the technological focus of her practice, however—Beeferman has investigated telescopes, satellites, planetariums, and precise timekeeping systems—the artist almost exclusively works by hand, offering what she describes as a fictional interpretation of these systems. “It is as much an intellectual process as an emotional one,” she says. “Inventing the slow, abstract narratives that surround these technologies allows for the transformation of this data from something scientific into something visceral, suggestive and open-ended.” Her well-known “Journeys Into The Unknown” series, for example, comprises pseudo-precise drawings of transportation, architecture, and space exploration—almost entirely abstract and yet intimately familiar just the same.
