Lee Yoon Seo
South Korean
Yoonseo Lee is an artist who uses internet sources to select subjects for her paintings, focusing on depicting the shortcomings of image representation. Her quick brushstrokes create smudged images that reflect the challenges faced by painting as a medium in keeping up with the overwhelming quantity and speed of information available online. She was born in Seoul in 1983, graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts in 2006, and completed her Master's degree in the same field in 2017. One of her notable series is "Image Defragment" (from 2020 onward), where she collects images from various online sources, sketches impressions onto canvas, and allows the images to overlap, resulting in glitch-like and fragmented compositions. Yoonseo Lee has also been recognized through selections in programs such as RE: SEARCH (Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, Seoul, 2022), Artist Incubating Program (Open Space Bae, Busan, 2017), and Daum Kakao Story Funding Project (Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, 2016).
