A multimedia artist whose work addresses the ways that information and images are distorted as they cross borders both physical and imagined, Leila Pazooki uses painting, video, photography, and installation to combat prejudices. Moment of Glory, for example, critiques the Western-centric art world by describing artists from African and Asian countries in the context of their American or European counterparts (such as the “Jasper Johns of Korea”). Pazooki is drawn to text-based art for its calligraphic origins, as well as the potential for words to transcend regional and linguistic divides, as previously proven by Dadaists, Abstract Expressionists, and midcentury street artists. In her series “The Aesthetic of Censorship,” Pazooki erases central figures from world-renowned artworks to expose censors as markers of societal values, and to challenge convention by displacing art objects.
