In her photography, Lena Herzog approaches her wide-ranging subjects with endless curiosity, seeking to find moments of transcendence. Her images have included the “Lost Souls” series, featuring dreamy black-and-white studies of scientific curiosities, and investigations into human rituals, practices, and pursuits, such as bullfighting, Buddhist pilgrimages, and comic-book conventions. Having studied with master European printers, Herzog creates luminous C-prints and silver gelatin prints using her own chemical recipes to stunning effect. “Can one capture dreams in a photograph?” she asks. In her revealing images of humanity, Herzog strives toward this end, invoking the nuanced desires and idiosyncrasies of her subjects.
