Leopoldo Novoa
Spanish, 1919–2012
Leopolda Nóvoa was born in the Spanish city of Pontevedra in 1919. He emigrated to Uruguay in 1938, where he studied Law for three years. In 1942, Nóvoa embraced his relationship with pottery and a few years later around 1947, began painting, specifically murals and political sketches. During this time, Nóvoa met Argentianian artist, Luís Seoane, who encouraged Nóvoa to pursue the arts, even helping Nóvoa organise his first individual exhibition at the Velázquez Gallery in 1953.
In 1965, Nóvoa definitively moved to Paris and in 1974, held his first exhibition at the Eduard Loeb gallery in Paris. Since then, Novoa has earned several premier awards from his home country including the Castelao Medal (1993), City of Pontevedra Prize (1997), and Critics' Prize of Galicia (2002).
His work is held in public and private collections worldwide, including MOMA, New York; Fonds National d'Art Contemporain and Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
