Claiming, “the fusion of art and technology must reveal some truth about humanity,” Li Hui merges industrial materials with technology, producing evocative sculptures and installations through which he explores the uneasy balance between nature and the manmade, and the destructive potential within creation. He studied sculpture and found his voice with his capstone project, for which he transformed an old car into a double-headed vehicle. When driven, it appeared to move backward and forward simultaneously, throwing the nature of progress into question. The visual and conceptual power of this piece spurred additional car-based works, including F1 (2008), a racecar cast out of illuminated resin, with the skeleton of a prehistoric creature etched inside. He has also composed works using acrylic and LED lights.
