Exploring the nature of time and impermanence, Li Jingfei creates installations from clouds and mist as well as light-based photographs and videos. Li brings stability to fleeting scenes through documentation, exploring human actions by contemplating time and its passage. Portraying time as a visible and scientific entity, Li’s work captures temporary occurrences in order to underscore the transience of human existence and civilizations. The artist’s landscapes, in particular, function as mirrors that reflect her feelings, beliefs, and fears regarding her identity and her environment. Her earlier works centered on the increasingly rare art of handmade Yunnan kites as a means to better understand local Chinese culture and historic traditions of art and storytelling.
