Liao Guohe 廖國核
Chinese, b. 1977
Liao Guohe gained recognition in the Chinese art scene in the new millennium for his employment of vulgar content and irreverence for artistic styles on canvas. His works are often considered as “bad paintings”, Liao trolls with ethical notions of “truth”, “justice” and other terms, of which their ambiguity and gray areas are the cues for the artist to project the complex realities, let it be social, political, or aesthetic, in China. Often times, the content of his paintings comprises of the most awkward, perverse, politically incorrect or even offensive scenarios. The motifs he often adopts serve as a double edged sword, that on the one hand may be understood as a disguise for the truth he seeks to represent, on the other hand, reveals the oppressive political condition in China in terms of arts and culture falling outside of the official rhetoric.
