Biography

Considered one of America’s foremost painters of genre scenes, Lilly Martin Spencer prolifically produced naturalistic, detailed, and highly finished vignettes of domestic life, as well as jewel-like still lifes and stately studio portraits. Women were the protagonists of many of Spencer’s paintings, depicted in the midst of household chores and sharing sweet moments with their children and husbands. The members of her own household—her husband, their 13 children, and their domestic help—often served as her models.
