Description
Signed in chinese with seal (lower left) PROVENANCEChina Guardian 2013 Autumn Auctions, Lot 1035Lin Fengmian is one of the founders of Chinese modern art educators, ushering in Chinese modern art history, who has an irreplaceable position in art history of the 20th century. He studied in France in early years when he was determined to change the situation of Chinese art. He is an advocator, a pioneer and one of the important representative figures of the artistic ideal, “the integration of Chinese and western”. His creation is not only the exploring the art, but also pursuing the value. In Autumn Landscape, a representative landscape painting by Lin, the viewer can feel clearly “the ideal of harmony and spiritual integration between East and West” that he pursuits in which he involves western art techniques to create Eastern beauty of artistic conception, so as to depict “the landscape in his heart”.Lin created landscape paintings long before. He did not take landscape painting as a system then. In 1953, he traveled in Tianping Mountain in Suzhou where he left profound impression on the maple woods, pools and roads in autumn. From then on, he began to create “new landscape” mainly composed of rich colors and changing lights. Then it became a series in which many landscape works were themed as autumn landscape as we can see. These landscapes, just like the series of autumn ducks and West Lake, are the most distinctive and appealing landscape works in Lin’s mature period. In the representative work Autumn Landscape, it applies distinctive strokes and tones mixing the warm and cold colors, which integrates the space structure and light-color effect of western paintings with Chinese landscape paintings, so it creates a poetic landscape between reality and illusion.Autumn Landscape is painted on squared papers in which the idyllic poetic flavor is revealed. The dominant tone is orange, an autumn color. The wood changes from green, to yellow, then to red, and inside it lies the village. The ravine stream in the front reflects quiet but rich colors. Lin involves some techniques in western paintings, like lights, reflections, a contrast of warm and cold colors, and a sense of space into the painting, but it keeps the transparency of ink in a whole. In the distant lies the ink color. The receding pine and cypress, mountains and clouds, together with the gold maple woods in the mid and the stream in the front, endow the picture with rich levels, which conveys a particular conception. The mix of colors and lights, the detail processing bring complex changes to the time and space, which demonstrates bright, beautiful, and rich tones in autumn of the village. Together they play a lyric and harmonious melody.Autumn Landscape, a classic work of the autumn series by Lin, integrates the color into the ink. The work, in a concise language, creates a distant and quiet “new landscape” of the autumn. All the techniques and images stay to the oriental style of Chinese traditional poetic paintings. The picture presents a quiet atmosphere in which the impression on autumn is revealed in maple woods, mountains and white walls and tiles, so remote, which leads the viewer lost in thoughts.
