Lindy Lee
Australian, b. 1954
For over four decades, Lindy Lee has been making art that explores her identity as a Chinese Australian. Lee is acclaimed for sculptural works that involve impulsive processes such as burning and splattering, which reflect her study of Taoism and Buddhism. Repetitive circles figure in these meditative pieces, like Moonlight Deities (2019–20), an immersive installation of paper with holes Lee burned with a soldering iron. The cosmic work was a highlight of a major solo show at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia that toured the continent between 2020 and 2022; it featured Lee’s 1980s manipulated photocopies of canonical Western artworks. Themes of authenticity and spiritual enlightenment weave through her bodies of work, which have increased in scale over time. Lee has also made several public artworks; she received a record-breaking $10 million commission from the National Gallery of Australia for a monumental outdoor sculpture in 2021.
