Lionel Bawden
Australian, born 1974

The core of Lionel Bawden’s artistic practice is his use of hexagonal colored pencils as sculptural material, constructing them into abstract works that evoke the human form, landscapes, amorphous creatures, phalluses, and other forms laden with metaphoric possibilities. The colored pencils are filled with associations, evoking childhood and nascent creativity. Bawden also works in painting, performance, installation, and colored pencil on paper; in each medium he maintains his concern with repetition, transformation, and the tension between figure and abstraction. He cites the work of Felix Gonzalez-Torres as a source of inspiration.
