Liu Weijian’s cool, muted palette and apparent emotional disengagement render his close-up depictions of architecture, interiors, and infrastructure unsettling. New, soulless industrial buildings, construction sites, anonymous workers toiling away, and other depictions of an anonymous and fragmented urban life suggest meaninglessness in contemporary existence. If people figure into the compositions at all, they appear lonely and small, insignificant compared to their overpowering surroundings. An annual summer trek across randomly chosen parts of China informs Liu’s perception of the passage of time on rural and urban landscapes alike, as these scenes make their way into his paintings and drawings.
