Best known as the frontwoman for experimental art-rock band Gang Gang Dance, Lizzi Bougatsos works primarily with materials found on the streets of New York City, which she says “reveal the society we form.” Like the photomontages of Hannah Höch or Lutz Bacher, Bougatsos’ mixed-media collages, based on celebrity photos and advertisements, critique the media culture’s influence on our notions of beauty and gender. Her work—posters with welded braces or street signs with day-glo phalluses—is playful, but with an uncanny undertone.
