Lone Skov Madsen
Danish, b. 1964
The forms in Lone Skov Madsen's world are issued in what are frequently very extended series. There is a clear connection between the consistency that she establishes in her investigations of surfaces, material and ornamentalism and the efforts that carry the exploration of form systems. It is the repetitions and the variations in the sequences that absorb her interest. What we have here is a cool and rational approach, which - almost
against expectations - emanates utterly sensual and palpably interesting results.
Lone Skov Madsen's universe is distinctly ornamental, but not in the classical sense. It is a new kind of ornamentation, where repetition may be present, but never predictability. It is the very small variations in Lone Skov Madsen's pieces that arouse our interest in them - and inspire us to move into their depth. The fact is that here, there is much more that meets the eye. It is simmering and seething and bubbling in the platters and on the pitchers. Sometimes, the surfaces are virtually overflowing with palpable texturality. Within this ornamentation, however, the surface represents something more than itself. To an equal extent, the surface also occasions an opportunity for immersion and transcendence. And this can be quite a soaring and intensely mesmerizing experience.
