Lotty Rosenfeld conducts public interventions that reframe questions of space and political agency. A participant in the Venice Biennale and Documenta, Rosenfeld spent many years of her practice living under Augusto Pinochet’s regime in Chile, which informed both her politics and actions. Rosenfeld is best known for Una milla de cruces sobre el pavimento (1979), in which she added a perpendicular line to the dashed lines separating lanes on a road. Documented in photographs and on video, the action interrupted the flow of traffic, becoming a means for Rosenfeld to reclaim the public space that had effectively been seized by Pinochet. Since then, Rosenfeld’s work has continued to confront the political machinations that determine Chilean society, while also evincing the same attention to the formal qualities present in her earlier work.
