Louis Boudreault
Canadian, b. 1956
Louis Boudreault’s portraits depict famous figures from the twentieth century – whether be artists, athletes, writers, philosophers, singers – all captured in the moments of their youth. The portraits are based off archival imagery of the historical figures, blended with Boudreault’s own interpretation of their personality and legacy. Boudreault mixes drawing, painting, collage and pressed handmade paper on board to form a unique three-dimensional element on a traditionally two-dimensional medium. The edges of the artwork consist of layered paper fastened with metal binding, which creates the illusion of multiple documents and images held together. The tactility of the paper incites the viewer to flip through the pages of the figure’s life, witnessing the development their genius, and uncovering their inner thoughts. Suddenly, the distant memories of the twentieth century’s most famous minds become intimately personal.
Louis Boudreault is a French Canadian artist who, after studying literature and theatre, trained at the prestigious École du Louvre in Paris, France. His work has been exhibited worldwide – at the Biannele d’Art Contemporain (Florence), the Toronto International Art Fair, Art Miami, Art New York, Art Beatus Hong Kong, the 37th Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain (Paris), among others.
