Biography

Lucas Knipscher received his training in photography, but has since worked with textiles, digital imagery, ceramic, plastics, and even scent. Many of his strategies and choices of material are borrowed from his major influences, Cosima von Bonin and Isa Genzken. Though his works vary widely in style and composition, they often include soft sculptures, upholstered objects, and assemblages of both found and made objects. In several bodies of work, Knipscher uses hand-made and hand-dyed fabrics from India, Japan, and Indonesia, which finally appear as mangled canvases slathered in photo emulsion and jarring slipcovers for Marcel Breuer chairs. The image of the mouse Jerry, of the children’s cartoon Tom and Jerry, is hidden in many of Knipscher’s works as a personal avatar.
