Lyle Owerko

Demonstrating keen perception and technical mastery, the work of photographer and filmmaker Lyle Owerko has an enduring place in the realms of both pop culture and journalism. Owerko is best known for his Time magazine cover photo of the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center complex, which was included in the American Society of Magazine Editors’ list of the 40 most influential magazine covers of the last 40 years. His series “The Boombox Project” (2005-2010), consisting of photographs of vintage portable stereos, chronicles the history and influence of the boombox on pop culture. Owerko was awarded the title of Hasselblad Master in 2010 for “The Samburu,” his series of portraits of the Samburu people in Kenya. His photography has been collected by museums including the Victoria & Albert Museum and has been featured in The New York Times, The Village Voice, and by NPR.
