Mac Adams

Mac Adams is best known for his “Mystery” series of narrative black-and-white photographs that draw on elements of film noir, and which are sometimes presented alongside arrangements of objects. To create the works, he cast his family and friends in staged vignettes loaded with visual clues before capturing them in photographs, some of which are displayed as diptychs or in sequences. Adams is interested in the spaces between images, or what he calls the “narrative void.” He is also known for creating large, sometimes room-sized, installations that display the evidence of fictional crimes, including objects, items of furniture, and vehicles such as a motorcycle or lifeboat—which audience members are invited to decipher—as well as public art projects, including outdoor sculptures that project figurative shadows onto the ground.
