Marcelo Schuster
Argentinian, b. 1971
Marcelo Schuster works at the interface of art and design. His works are preceded by extensive research in the use of material, tools and colors. Using his studio as a laboratory, he creates an experimental framework within which he also repurposes existing devices, such as, for instance, turning a metronome into a drawing instrument. This creates a metronome (graph) that supports him in placing thousands of small color points – one next to the other – regularly on a paper surface. Carried out by hand, minimal deviations creep into what at first glance seems to be perfect and monochrome color fields. Over days and weeks, working by hand, Marcelo Schuster creates geometric color fields and optical patterns, for instance moiré, by means of stencils, straightedges and rulers. Moiré patterns are visual effects brought about by the interference of two grids. This seeming deviation is intentional, as irregularities arise from the inability to achieve mechanical perfection: that is the poetic moment. “Each time you look, you try to penetrate the system, following the lines and points with microscopic precision, comparable to a zooming in and out”. What Marcelo Schuster first tries out in a small format as a draft, he then brilliantly transfers to wall surfaces.
