Maren Kloppmann
German, b. 1962
Maren Kloppmann sculpts geometric porcelain forms to produce provocative wall works. Frequently arranged in gridlike compositions, her assemblages draw from a minimalist aesthetic. Since 2013, Kloppman has been developing the “Shadow Wall Pillow” series, which has been exhibited at museums including the Minnesota Museum of American Art and the Weisman Art Museum. Her modular pieces reflect her interest in manipulating light and shadow to transform perceptions of space. The artist finds inspiration in the sculptures of Constantin Brancusi and Isamu Noguchi and in the ceramics of Ruth Duckworth. After training with a master potter in Germany and receiving her MFA from the University of Minnesota, she became a three-time recipient of the McKnight Artist Fellowship for the tableware and vessels she produced. She now focuses on expansive wall-mounted installations, which showcase a harmony of architectural and biomorphic forms.
