Former ballet dancer Margaret Garrett feels a close connection between dancing and painting. She discusses her abstract paintings in terms of action and vibration, saying, “When I begin working on a new piece, I see the paper or canvas as an empty stage and the line as movement: texture, form, the way that colors interact are all different manifestations of motion and energy.” Her works are known for their dense layers of colors and their incorporation of a wide range of painted marks. Though she uses largely abstract motifs, all of her images are based on shapes and patterns found in nature. She cites Brice Marden, Cy Twombly, Mark Tobey, Bill Jensen, and Joan Mitchell as influences.
