Margaret Keane, born 1927 in Nashville, was an American artist best known for her paintings of subjects with oversized, expressive eyes. For years after Keane developed her signature style in the 1960s, her then-husband Walter Keane falsely claimed credit for her works, leading to a long-standing controversy. Her paintings, often depicting children or animals, evoke deep emotions and have a haunting, ethereal quality. Keane’s work experienced a resurgence in popularity following the release of Tim Burton’s 2014 biographical film Big Eyes, which highlighted her life and struggles.
