Maria Luisa Hernandez
Chilean, b. 1966
Maria Luisa Hernandez earned her MFA at the University of Chile and has since been named one of Le Courvoisier & The Observer’s Future 500 Rising Stars. Hernandez’s work has been exhibited at Cadogan Contemporary since 2010 in several solo and group shows as well as at the Royal College of Art and many other international galleries. Notable institutions and individuals alike, such as Cambridge University, Uma Thurman and Michael Jackson, have collected Hernandez’s work.
Hernandez's powerful, nature inspired oil abstracts explore the sensuality and drama in nature. Her paintings are replete with a rarely seen level of emotion and spontaneity that echoes the infinite natural world, all communicated by her exquisite facility with the brush. Hernandez creates dreamlike environments with lucid clarity. Faced with her work, the viewer is immediately aware of the power in natural phenomena beyond the merely physical realm. A canvas inspired by the static world pushes the viewer into the past and the future; Hernandez does nothing to restrict the viewing experience, she opens the door for the audience to step through.
