Maria Martins

A escultora Maria Martins (1894-1973) é uma artista importante do modernismo internacional. Começou sua carreira tardiamente, mas sua presença no cenário artístico foi marcante principalmente nos anos 1940 e 1950, quando viveu entre os EUA e a França e manteve colaboração com figuras como André Breton, Marcel Duchamp e Piet Mondrian. O crítico e historiador da arte Michel Seuphor se referiu a Maria Martins em livro de 1959 como “a grande escultora do surrealismo”. Seu trabalho, que inclui temática indígena brasileira, foi descrito como “poesia tropical”.
The sculptor Maria Martins (1894-1973) is an important artist of international modernism. She started her career late, but her presence in the artistic scene was marked mainly in the 1940s and 1950s, when she lived between the US and France and collaborated with figures such as André Breton, Marcel Duchamp and Piet Mondrian. The critic and art historian Michel Seuphor referred to Maria Martins in a 1959 book as “the great sculptor of surrealism”. Her work, which includes Brazilian indigenous themes, has been described as “tropical poetry”.
