Maria Naita (The Late)
Ugandan
Maria was a painter and sculptor. She was an accomplished multimedia African female artist.
She held a masters degree in Fine Art from Makerere University but her work goes beyond her
education, with a masterly of her trade and accomplishments way beyond her age and
experience.
With several major Art work installations already under her belt its hard to tell where she
exhales most, sculpture or painting but which ever media she chose she was excellent.
Her work was mainly figurative inspired by her immediate environment, belt, social, economic,
religious or even political affairs.
The African woman being her favorite theme basing on her experience onto canvas wood and
metal ,she presents life through the eyes of an African working woman, mother and wife.
She exhibited in East Africa, Europe, Africa and USA. She gave internships and training to
several young sculptors, including Patrick Mulondo.
Some of the great projects she worked on including;
• Kabamba monument when Museveni launched the gorilla war
• The Ntore dance state house Rwanda
• The 50th anniversary monument or 50 years of independence in Uganda
• Building a nation on the revenue authority offices in Rwanda
• She said the common wealth (CHOGAM Monument ) was her best because they used
different materials and working with the new material and coming up with something
great was amazing and at the same time challenging but it was a project where everyone
would go mad with her, the deadline was so close and she didn’t care. There was no
sleep.
