Marie France Cournoyer
Canadian
Through minimalist gestures that focus on a few essential archetypes, Marie France Cournoyer’s work invites viewers into little-visited sensory territory. Cournoyer draws her inspiration from poetic literature. She is especially interested in the links that poets such as Francis Ponge and Emily Dickinson have with banality and infinity. Her work is multidisciplinary. From drawings to installations, she integrates a raw materiality into her creations that she sees as a metaphor for our own condition. She transforms the state of her materials by, for example, painting them as if they were smeared or perforating them as if they were riddled to sow semantic doubt. Each one of her projects has deepened her artistic language. Her research has earned her several grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.
